Rhetorical Analysis

"Chumming Around with Great Whites"

In the article "Chumming Around with Great Whites" written by Andrew C. Revkin, published in the New York Times on August 17, 2012. The writer argues how chumming the water to attract great white sharks for scientific research and tourism may lead to more attacks on humans. There has been very little research done about this topic but the author feels that chumming does not lead to more attacks. He states that sharks are not man eaters and that if they do attck you, it is by mistake not on purpose. If that was the case people would be eaten all the time. Some scientists and layman feel that chumming does lead to more attacks because it conditions the sharks to asssociate people with food.

The author makes few points to benefit his belief that more attacks do or do not occur. I feel that his opinion piece should have had more research involved with what his final opinion ended up being. it seemed like a bunch of facts that were not backed up by anything other than what he thought, which is fine but leads to ethos. The paper is soley based on his feelings towards sharks and what he thinks they will or will not do.

If he had written using logos, I probaley would have agreed more with the author, there was nothing he could have said to make me agree with him. I already have strong opinions about this subject and needed to be persuaded to believe in something else.
